What is a timber frame home?A Timber Frame or Post & Beam home is constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. Some of the joints, such as dovetail, you may recognize. Some you may not. Some, like this joint may be more complex than you ever dreamed. This is a joint used in the valley system in my home. Seven planes intersect at this point. To do this without the use of any nails or bolts takes time, patience and precision. Details like this make your house a showpiece that will last for generations.
How is it built? It is built using beams that can range from 12X12 oak posts to smaller 5X7 pine purlins or rafters. We then cut these timbers, adding precision joinery and fasten them with hand made oak pegs. There are not any nails in your frame - and it will have more integrity than most site built homes today.
Timber frames have been known to withstand hurricanes and even earthquakes. It's an insurance company's dream! All the joinery is done with a variety of chisels and hand tools. The hand tools used are as old as the tradition itself - Well, not the one's we use!
The frame can be cut in our 3000sf facility here in Maine and raised on your location anywhere in the country. Raising day is one filled with excitement and energy!
Why should you consider a timber frame home? The benefits will help you to realize why we have studied this art for years and promote this old world style of building in such a disposable age.
